(23) COMRADES' MARATHON, DURBAN to PIETERMARITZBERG, SOUTH AFRICA, 30TH MAY 1962
Three Surrey runners, Ron Linstead (Belgrave Harriers), John Smith (Epsom & Ewell Harriers) and Don Turner (Epsom & Ewell Harriers) flew out to South Africa on 19th May to contest the Comrades' Marathon. This is no ordinary marathon. It is 54 miles more than twice as long as a 'standard' marathon and the runners climb hills totalling over 4,000ft from the start at Durban (see-level) to the finish at Pieternaritzberg (2,000ft+). Results:-
1st John Smith 5 hours 57 minutes 5 seconds; 3rd Don Turner 6:04:04 and 5th Ron Linstead 6:10:09.

(24) SURREY COUNTY MENS TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS, MOTSPUR PARK, 29TH & 31ST MAY & 2ND JUNE 1962

SENIOR 100 YARDS FINAL. Kamor Agbo-Ola finishes just ahead of Mel Cheskin (5). On the far side is Keith Newnham who was third and Johnny Crumplin (12) was fourth. All four were timed at 10.4.
SENIOR 3 MILES. Two members of Walton AC in dead heat - Chris Strange (44) and Bob Roath (27).
Competing in the Festival of Labour meet held at Battersea Park on 16th June Gordon Miller (SLH) cleared 6ft 9ins on his first attempt to equal the UK National record and beat his own AAA National record set in 1960 by ¼ inch.

Silver medal for Ray Middleton (Belgrave H) and Bronze medal for Ray Hall (Belgrave H).
