(55) FRANCES RATCHFORD TAKES OVER AS SURREY CHAIRMAN
The Executive Committee meeting on October 19th saw a changing of the guard for Surrey as Tom Pollak of Hercules Wimbledon AC stepped down as Chairman after almost 10 years and handed over the mantle to Frances Ratchford of Ranelagh Harriers and St Mary's Richmond AC.
Tom took over in 2010 after serving as our President. He joined the Executive Committee following the 1997 AGM when he was the organiser of the road relays at Wimbledon Park and also led the team which manned the gate at our championships which he has done every year since. He also temporarily chaired the Officials Sub-Committee following the death of David Littlewood and was Chairman of the Competitions Sub-Committee for more than a decade.
In his farewell statement to the Association he said what an honour it had been to serve as Chairman and previously as President.
He added: "It has been a great privilege to lead a great team and I can assure you that until you sit in this chair you don't, and indeed can't, appreciate the enormous amount of work which is carried out on this Association's behalf.
I attended last night's Officials Sub-Committee meeting and what has always impressed me is the workmanlike way in which our scores of officials carry out their most important roles. There may be athletes but without these officials volunteering and giving freely of their time there would be no sport. So we owe them a big debt of gratitude as well as all the other people who keep this county association ticking over.
If they and the other volunteers continue to strive then the county is in good hands and has a strong future."
He then introduced the new Chairman. "So I'm delighted to introduce you to your next Chairman who you all know, Frances Ratchford, a widely experienced athletics official. I'm confident the County Association is in good hands and will continue to progress under her enthusiastic leadership."
Anyone wishing to contact Frances in her capacity as Chairman of SCAA should use the e-mail address: chairman@surreyathletics.uk.
