(45) BRIAN HEWSON 1933 - 2022

Brian Hewson died in Cape Town, South Africa on 13th September 2022 aged 89. Brian won the Mitcham Schools 440yds title in 1947 and subsequently joined Mitcham AC. In 1949 he won the Surrey Youths 880yds title - the first of 8 Surrey titles (7 at 880yds and 1 at one mile). His first major success came in 1951 when he won the AAA Junior 880yds title. In 1953 - 1959 he went on to win a further 6 AAA Senior titles (4 at 880yds and 2 at one mile. He competed in two Olympic Games 1956 (5th in 1500m final) and 1960 (4th in 800m heats). He competed in 2 European Championships: 1954 (5th in 800m semi-finals) and 1958 (1st in final). His victory in 1958 was notable because his selection for the 1500m rather than the 800m for which he was the reigning AAA champion was a surprise. However, the selectors were vindicated as Brian set a British record of 3:41.1 in the heats before winning the final in 3:41.9. Brian also competed in 2 Commonwealth Games - he was 2nd in the 1954 880yds and then in 1958 he was 2nd in the 880yds and 8th in the mile. Following his retirement from competition in 1960 he maintained his links with Mitcham AC and became their President..
