(14) MICHAEL NUGENT 1935 - 2020

It is with regret that we have learnt that, following a short illness, Michael Nugent died peacefully at his home in New York on 4th August 2020. Michael was one of many pupils from John Fisher School who excelled at the Pole Vault in the 1950s. After John Fisher he went to Cambridge University and won an athletics blue.
Although our records for the 1950s are incomplete they do show Michael winning the County Pole Vault title twice as a Youth; once as a Junior and three times as a Senior. In 1955 he won the Senior Boys Pole Vault at the English Schools Championships. Michael represented Great Britain at the International Student Games at Paris in 1957 where he finished =11th with a clearance of 3.35m.

(17) MARTIN ETCHELLS

It is with regret that we have learnt of the death of Martin Etchells. Martin was well known to many Surrey officials and, in particular, we acknowledge the excellent relationship we had with Martin in his role as Championship Secretary of the Sussex Indoor Championships which have been held jointly with Surrey for many years. Sussex County AA will be publishing an obituary for Martin on their website.

(18) NICK MORGAN 1938 - 2020

It is with regret that we have learnt that, Nick Morgan died on 1st November 2020. Nick was an international shot putter and represented England at the Cardiff British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1958. His family home was less than half a mile from Croydon Sports Arena where he joined Croydon Harriers and trained assiduously in the adjacent "gym". He was ideally built for shot putting and gained a nickname with the club of "Mighty Mouse". His best performance of 16.95m was set in Paris in 1961. In his post-competitive life he moved to Devon where he worked to improve sports facilities. In recent years he moved back to the Croydon area and despite being wheelchair bound he proved to be inspirational to Croydon Harriers throwers he met on visits to Croydon Arena.

(19) MARIANNE GOLDIE 1936 - 2020

We regret to report that, following a few months of illness, Marianne Goldie has died. Marianne regularly attended Surrey fixtures as a stalwart Field Official for many years. She lived all her life in or around Wallington, Surrey. Her love of athletics was nurtured by her father Cyril Aldridge who we think was a local club runner; we believe Marianne too was a club athlete as a teenager. In any case they would both often be found at the White City participating or cheering.
Marianne qualified as a Field judge in the early 1980s and enjoyed judging at club, County and regional level and particularly at Schools athletics events.
She was for many years a member of the Governing body of St Philomena's Catholic High School for Girls, in Carshalton, and was also on the school's Old Girls Association Committee.
Her health declined in the last decade and she leaves four children and two adult grandchildren.

(20) PAUL NIHILL 1939 - 2020

Photo by Mark Shearman published in SCAN Edition No. 32
Taken at the European Championships, Athens in 1969.
It is with regret that we have learnt that Paul Nihill has died, another victim of COVID-19. Paul was one of Britain's most successful walkers. He won Gold (Athens 1969) and Bronze (Helsinki 1971) medals at European Championships plus an Olympic Silver medal at Tokyo in 1964. He will also be remembered for his brave attempt to win gold at the Mexico 1968 Olympics where he was defeated by the conditions and had to retire - his first defeat in 86 races over 3 years. He was awarded an MBE and had a road (Nihill Place) named after him in Croydon where he lived for a large part of his adult life. Paul was a member of both Surrey Walking Club and Croydon Harriers and was awarded a Life Membership of Surrey County Athletic Association.
